Every year, all across the country, hospitals and healthcare facilities must ensure that all nursing staff complete mandatory annual education. This annual education, required by the Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, is deemed essential for the safe functioning of our health care organizations.
As educators, you have to find a way to get every nurse to review training materials on exciting topics like handling hazardous waste, multidrug resistant organisms (MDRO), central line–associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI), surgical site infections (SSI), professional conduct, risk management, waived testing, and the Joint Commission’s mission. Depending on your client population, you may also have specific training indicated, like dementia training, bariatric sensitivity training, or crisis training.
Ongoing education for nursing is an important part of patient and staff safety, but how can it be effective if no one pays any attention to it? Most nurses simply skim the material, skip to the quiz at the end, and use the process of elimination to guess at answers until they get the pass and return to work. And who can blame them? Most of these mandatory training materials are dry at best!
For many years, most facilities used photocopied packets with a quiz at the end, and this was updated as needed. Passing around the answers to the quiz was an accepted practice among staff who believed they had more important things to do with their time. This was hardly an effective means of either educating the staff or of assessing the nursing staff’s knowledge of any changes to policies or procedures!
More recently, online learning has changed the face of workforce training. Many hospitals and healthcare sites now have computerized learning management systems (LMS) for tracking staff education. One of the advantages of an LMS is that it’s often accessible 24/7, allowing staff to log in and complete training in off hours. It is also much easier to track and score, and department heads can easily follow up with any staff members who are slow to complete their assigned modules.
The challenge that remains is that to be effective, these online modules must be engaging and memorable!
Unfortunately, many of these courses are designed to be little more than digital recreations of the paper packets we are all used to. They are often glorified slide presentations, and the only interactive elements may be fill in the blanks or multiple choice questions… just like you’d see on a paper handout. Hardly inspiring!
Focus Eduvation creates custom, truly interactive eLearning courses that will bring your staff up to date on new policies and current best practices. Our innovative courses not only provide opportunities for your nurses to review information, but can provide didactic education, critical thinking exercises, and opportunities to assimilate concepts and apply them in real-world scenarios that assess their understanding.
Focus Eduvation’s fully customized courses provide in-depth training that engages the learner’s attention. Our assessments can also be tied to competencies and certifications for other other required training.
Annual mandatory training shouldn’t be “just paperwork.” It’s done to ensure that healthcare professionals have the most up to date knowledge and skills to deliver the best evidence-based care in the interest of patient safety… but if it’s not effective, what is the point?
