Your resume is the first indicator to a potential employer of who you are, so ensuring you have an overall great resume is your first step in your job search. If you are nervous about an upcoming job interview and showing how your resume applies to an employer, here are some helpful tips to succeed.

Have someone review your resume before submitting it

Just like with any document, it’s always a good idea to have someone else review it and make edits or feedback. Doing your research on which sections and credentials to include on your resume is a great starting place and looking at samples as well. Have a friend or tutor review your resume to get their opinion before submitting a resume to a job search platform or company.

Include components other than education and prior job experience

While job experience and education are an essential part of a resume, don’t forget to include other important skills. Employers want to know what skills you possess other than academic and job credentials- such as having great communication, and organizational skills, being a fast learner, or having teamwork skills. Also include any software or programs you have experience using, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SalesForce, HubSpot, or Zoom.

Include a personalized cover letter with your resume

Including a cover letter can you an employer that you took the time to introduce yourself in a more personal manner and provides a chance for you to show more of your personality rather than your credentials. While there are job applications that do not require a cover letter, one can show a potential future employer that you care enough to put extra effort into your application. Your cover letter can also include why you have decided to apply with their company and how you might be an asset to them.

Try using a template to build a resume structure

It can be tough to decide which format to use for your resume, especially if you have a longer list of job experience. Typically, employers like a resume that fits into one page. Explore templates and samples on job sites or even Microsoft Word and play around with some templates until you find one that looks presentable and fits all your information.

Include a reference to support your application

On many job platforms, you have the option to upload a reference document. While it is not often required for a job application, it’s a great supplement to your resume. It shows the employer that you not only took the time to include a recommendation in your profile but that someone knows your abilities and talents well enough to write one for you. It’s a great way to enhance your overall application.
