This credential is for the aspiring transportation operations manager who is learning to manage all transportation or hauling needs within a business, such as budgets, schedules, and route planning. Your job in this career is to assign trucks, ensure drivers know their routes, and keep track of vehicle maintenance needs. You also track shipments, liaise with customers, and check all areas of the supply chain for efficiency, all while making sure operations continue to run smoothly. You complete all paperwork related to transportation, develop or revise shipping policies for the company, and implement plans that increase company profits. Transportation operations managers build relationships, understand technological and human systems, and manage both the needs of their people and clients, as well as technical processes to ensure operational success.
This micro-credential in trucking operations will give the new-to-trucking or entry-level trucking industry employee an overview of trucking company operations, roles within the industry, and critical industry standards and regulations. Modules cover how trucking and freight operations work across the United States, the foundations for various types of freight, trucking equipment, trucking loads, driver planning and driver hours of service, processes for being able to plan and dispatch loads to drivers, customer service, and basic understanding of accounting principles that are necessary for trucking management.
Module 1: Trucking 101: Learn about freight types, standard trucking equipment, types of carriers and their operations, and terminologies necessary for understanding the trucking industry, and identify the various roles in trucking companies.
Module 2: Driver’s Hours of Service Rules & Regulations: Learn about FMCSA rules and regulations for drivers’ hours of service, driving Limits for CMV drivers, driver violations, and proper use of FMCSA regulations for dispatching and load planning.
Module 3: Driver Management: Learn the importance of relationships between professional drivers and their driver managers. Analyze the driver and driver management relationship, application of driver management skills in various real-world scenarios, and learn problem-solving skills that create effective solutions for your drivers.
Module 4: Load Planning and Dispatching: Learn how to plan the appropriate loads for drivers and the foundations of the dispatching process. Apply load planning terminology to make decisions when determining the best loads for your drivers. Learn how to analyze critical information to select loads, and solve issues that occur with loads.
Module 5: Managing Breakdowns/Customer Service and Service Issues: Learn how to manage multiple breakdown scenarios on and off-road, apply appropriate decision-making skills to resolve breakdown challenges throughout the system, and practice to prevent road breakdowns from occurring. Learn best practices in customer service in trucking, including client and driver relationship building, understanding customer concerns, and applying customer service skills in various scenarios. Gain a full understanding of the various stakeholders in trucking operations, including drivers, receivers, shippers, clients, and more.
Module 6: Accounting and Finance: Learn the applications in calculating rate per mile calculations, while learning to price loads with market rates. Discuss the financial situations that affect trucking companies and learn the common accounting terms related to the trucking industry.
